INITIATIVE.EU

The objectives of our Initiative.eu platform are:

  • To empower (potential) initiators of ECIs to open up a deliberative online space for their respective ECI ideas and invite EU stakeholders to support and give input in the formulation of the ECI initiatives;
  • To help the various stakeholders across Europe to federate their ECI initiatives;
  • To improve the quality & effectiveness of the ECI initiatives in order for these to be more successful once they are officially registered and set out to obtain the support of 1.000.000 citizens.

Political Support for Initiative.eu & the ECI process

The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) provides a once in a generation opportunity to transform European democratic life and to reduce the widening ‘Democratic Deficit’ affecting Europe and our modern democracies.

The European Citizens Initiative is all about taking the EU outside of the "Brussels beltway" and giving it full democratic expression. It is for the people to make use of this fascinating innovation. I am very much looking forward to see the European citizens' initiative in action.

Maros Sefcovic, European Commission Vice President, Responsible for interinstitutional relations & administration, and the European Citizens' Initiative.

The ECI offers as previously Erasmus or the Single Market a tangible focus and symbol of what it means to be European. However, it will only be a success, if Europe engages its stakeholders and citizens to create new kinds of co-operation amongst them and the EU institutions towards an emerging active European Public Sphere.

José Manuel Barroso, European Commission President.

The European Citizens’ Initiative is the 1st transnational instrument of participatory democracy in the world.

Gerald Häfner MEP, Rapporteur for European Citizens’ Initiative, European Parliament.
